What the app chooses not to remember
A memory that keeps everything is worth nothing. Until 19 May, asking for tomorrow's weather could leave a lasting trace in the app's memory, filed alongside an address or a recipe. Since then, perishable information is shown on a temporary card, read, and let go: it never becomes a memory. If it sheds light on something already remembered, the forecast for a trip that is already noted, it is filed inside that trip's card, dated, and replaced the next time you ask. And since 21 May, closing the temporary card leaves a small thumbnail in the conversation thread: one tap reopens it, and the end of the conversation clears it.
The notebook that records everything and finds nothing
Everyone knows someone who writes everything down. Every idea, every phone number, every train time, every restaurant recommended over dinner. The notebook fills up, the notes apps overflow, the screenshots pile up by the hundred. And the day you need the plumber's name, it is in there, somewhere, between a flight price comparison that expired eight months ago and the photo of a poster for a concert long past. Writing things down was never the problem. Finding them again is.
The reason is simple, and it is mechanical: every useless note lengthens the pile you have to search through for the useful ones. A memory, ours or a machine's, is not worth what it contains but what it hands back at the right moment. And to hand things back at the right moment, the bottom of the drawer must not be lined with things that should never have gone in.
Our own heads know this perfectly well. Nobody memorises yesterday's weather. You look at it, you take an umbrella or you don't, and you let it go. Nor do you remember the delay announced on the ring road one Tuesday in March, or the score from matchday twenty-three. That information was useful for a minute, it did its job, and your memory let it slide without being asked. This silent sorting is not a weakness of human memory. It is one of its finest functions, and it is what keeps the rest standing.
An app built around a memory had to learn the same move.
Tomorrow's weather is not a memory
XNeuronal knows how to look things up on the web when it does not know them: tomorrow's weather, the morning's news, a journey time, a sports result. The answer arrives with its sources, and that is as it should be.
The problem was in what happened next. Until 19 May, the app treated the result of a search like any other piece of information passing through the conversation: something that might deserve to be kept. And sometimes it kept it. You asked what the weather would be on Thursday, and a memory got written somewhere: "it will rain on Thursday". True on Tuesday. False on Friday. Still there in July.
That kind of memory is worse than useless, it is toxic on a delay. A stale fact filed among the real ones resurfaces weeks later, with the same confidence as everything else, in an answer that no longer makes any sense. And it adds bulk: every dead forecast, every cold score, every traffic report from an April evening makes searching the real memory a little slower and a little messier. The drawer gets lined with receipts.
The fix of 19 May comes down to one question, which the app now asks itself before writing down anything that came from a search: will this still be true, and still useful, in a month? The name of a medicine, a tradesman's address, the recipe found for Saturday: yes, probably. Tomorrow's weather, the state of the road, last night's score: no, never. What passes the test may become a memory. What fails it is shown, then let go.
Show it, then let it go
In practice, perishable information now arrives on a temporary card: a panel that settles over the screen for as long as it takes to read, then closes. Nothing is written behind it. No memory, no trace, no line in a drawer. The web search answers, the answer is displayed, and the memory stays exactly as it was before the question. Just like when someone tells you what the weather will be and you say thanks without reaching for a notebook.
That same day, the temporary card was made easier on the eyes, because it needed it. A search answer comes back structured, with headings, bold passages, lists, and the panel used to display all of that as one raw block of text, the structural marks visible in the middle of sentences. It now presents it as a proper page: headings are headings, lists are lists. And the sources below took the shape they deserved, a numbered list with the site's name standing out, five visible instead of three, each one opening with a tap. Information you are not going to keep should at least be perfectly readable while you look at it.
Unless it sheds light on something you keep
The first setting was too strict, and it took only a few hours and one very concrete case to see it.
A trip to Sicily was noted in the memory, with its dates. You ask what the weather will be like over there. Answer shown on the temporary card, card closed, information gone. And it really was gone: the only way to see it again was to ask again. Yet that forecast was not a one-minute curiosity. It shed light on something that is a genuine memory: the trip.
That is the second move learned on 19 May. When perishable information attaches to something that already exists in memory, it is neither kept as a memory of its own nor simply shown and lost. It is filed inside the card of the thing it illuminates. The Sicily trip's card gains a weather section, dated the day it was fetched, so that reading it later you know it is a forecast from a given day, not a truth. And if you ask again three days later, the section is replaced, not stacked: the card keeps the latest forecast, never a collection of dead ones.
Here too, the model is human. You do not memorise the weather, but you happily copy it into your travel plan, in its place, with the date. The memory is the trip. The weather is only an annotation on it, and an annotation gets replaced.
And when the app hesitates, two candidate cards that could receive the information, a doubt between durable and perishable, it has learned to do the least spectacular thing in the world: ask a short question, "is this for your trip to Sicily?", rather than guess. A memory that errs in silence costs more than a one-second question.
The thumbnail that catches the ephemeral
One flaw remained, lived with for two days and fixed on 21 May.
The temporary card does what it promises: it disappears. But it disappeared a little too well. You read the answer, you close it, and thirty seconds later you want to check a detail, Saturday's temperature, the name of a source. The information is nowhere any more. Not in the memory, which is intended. Not on the screen, which is normal. The only way out was to ask the question again, and wait again for a search to go out onto the web and bring back what you had in front of your eyes half a minute earlier.
That was paying twice for the same information, and above all it was a false dilemma. Between "becoming a memory" and "vanishing forever" there is a middle state everyone practises: staying within reach for a while. The morning paper does not enter your memory, but it stays on the living-room table until evening, and you can reopen it at the TV listings without having learned them by heart.
Since 21 May, when a temporary card closes, it leaves a small thumbnail in the conversation thread, attached beneath the answer that produced it. A word or two, the app's accent colour, nothing more. Tap it and the same card reopens, instantly, exactly as it was: no new search, no waiting, the phone had simply kept it at its elbow. This is not an interface novelty out of nowhere: beneath the assistant's answers, a thumbnail already opened the cards created during the exchange. On 21 May it learned to do the same for what is precisely not a saved card.
Because that is the point that matters: the thumbnail is not a memory. Nothing was written anywhere. It lives in the current conversation, like a bookmark resting on the thread, and when the conversation ends, it goes with it. The next day, yesterday's weather no longer exists anywhere in the app, and that is exactly what you want from it. The ephemeral has gained an honest lifespan: the moment you need it, not a minute more, and never again months too long.
The next day, the lists too
This bookmark move turned out to be more general than web search, and the very next day, 22 May, it was extended to another family of temporary displays: the lists.
When you ask "what have I got this week?" or "show me my tasks", the app composes a view of the moment, a schedule, a task list, a list of memos, and shows it in the same kind of passing panel. That view is not a memory either: it is a snapshot of an instant, assembled to answer, and saving it would be absurd. But once closed, it had the same flaw as the weather: to see it again, you had to ask again, and wait. Since 22 May it too leaves its thumbnail under the answer, "Schedule", "Tasks", "Memos", and reopens with a tap.
And while at it, those lists stopped being dead ends. Every line of a schedule or a task list speaks of a real card, one that is properly stored in memory. Tapping the line now opens that card, complete, with its checkboxes, its sections, its picture, the same one you would reach by any other path. The passing list became what it was meant to be: a disposable table of contents leading to durable pages.
Knowing how to forget is a feature
There is a very widespread reflex in software: keep everything, just in case. Storage costs next to nothing, so everything gets archived, and it gets called prudence. We all know the result, because we all live it: inboxes with sixty thousand messages, photo rolls where the dish of 4 February sits next to the birth of a child, screens of tabs and lists nobody browses any more because they have become attics.
A memory is not an attic. What gives ours its value is as much what it refuses as what it keeps: it lets yesterday's weather slip so it can hold, for years, a person's face or the way to a house. The May days told here taught the app that refusal, in three steps: tell the perishable from the durable, file the perishable that illuminates a memory inside that memory's card, with its date, and give the rest an honest existence, a card you read, a thumbnail that recalls it while the conversation lives, then nothing.
The result is invisible, and that is the goal. The memory no longer grows by one receipt with every question about rain. What you look for in it, you find, because nothing clutters it. And a one-minute piece of information stays, for that minute, exactly where it belongs: before your eyes, within reach, then nowhere.
